Peacoat: stylish winter outerwear

The Peacoat is an important component of a man’s winter wardrobe,  although not everyone is aware of it. The pea coat is usually cut straight to just above the knee and is often made of heavy fabric such as tweed or wool. It is ideal for autumn and winter days. The pea coat can be worn both with formal and informal clothing depending on the occasion, and our modern iteration is today a double breasted jacket with 6 to 8 large, rounded buttons, wide revers, to waist height vertical pockets on the front, and round cut sleeves.

The origins of the peacoat and its rebirth thanks to cinema

The peacoat has ancient origins. It dates back to the fascinating world of 1700’s military uniforms, first among the British sailors of the Royal Navy, then in the U.S. Navy.

According to some, the term peacoat derives from the Dutch pijjakker, meaning a rough wool coat. The Italian Caban likely comes from the Sicilian Cabbanu from the Arabic Qaba, used to describe a short cloak in rough material.

The peacoat is easy to wear, with jeans and a pair of sneakers for casual chic, or with classic cut trousers, a shirt, or a turtleneck sweater for a more formal look.

In addition to being elegant and versatile in look, the peacoat is also warm and practical thanks to its short, wide cut allowing great freedom of movement.

The peacoat in cinema

Thanks to appearances in cinema, the peacoat experienced a revival: James Cagney wore it in “Frisco Kid”, making it into a trend and starting a love affair with the garment among men and women alike. Steve McQueen and Gregory Peck also wore it, continuing the trend. It was Yves Saint Laurent who made the garment available to women, and every stylist since then, from Fay to Burberry, from Tommy Hilfinger to Loro Piana, has reimagined it in various shapes, colours and materials to create a unique garment, ever modern and perfect year round.

How to wear the peacoat?

The accessories to wear with a peacoat must be carefully chosen and balanced. The best way to wear this coat is to keep any scarves and accessories beneath it.

To obtain a classic look, the buttons should be kept closed and the jacket should hang low on the hips.

The peacoat is perfect in Winter and in Autumn: on cold days it can be worn with a sweater under it. When temperatures rise, it is perfect with a shirt or lighter jersey.

The peacoat is available in many colours and styles, and although it is a classic garment, it can be personalised and worn in infinite ways.
