The clothing industry is one of the most polluting in the world. This piece of information alone should be enough to encourage us to choose sustainable clothing, but there are also many other reasons for making this choice.
The clothing industry starts production with raw materials from the earth, connected with water and the animal and plant kingdoms. Its energy requirements are very high, and, as such, the choice to produce sustainable garments is not just a trend for us at Tramapulia.
The sustainable model is a point for reference for Tramapulia
The fashion industry, as we understand it, has transformed the social gap in countries where most of the labour is located into an unbridgeable abyss. The workers in developing countries have fewer safeguards and find themselves in a form of slavery.
Sustainable fashion is a new model able to measure the demand for goods against the true supply of resources available, taking into account workers rights and with social justice as an aim.
So, we want a clothing industry that is not only careful to reduce environmental impact linked to production and disposal of clothing, but is also invested in the social and demographic context and in the lives of the workers it employs.
It is with this in mind that Tramapulia looks towards overseas markets and Central Europe. Attention to style, to fabric choice and garment design, and equal attention to social justice and to the environmental sustainability of our production. To this end, we have decided to keep production in Italy, more precisely in Puglia, despite selling all over the world thanks to our E-commerce.
Sustainable fashion is more than just a trend
It is undeniable that sustainable production in the clothing industry has become something of a trend, something extra in the arsenal of the storytellers for the most famous brands. These are the same brands that exploited the poorest people for low cost labour and that used production processes with little to no care for their environmental impact.
For us at Tramapulia, sustainable production goes far deeper.
In our own small way, we would like use our daily actions to influence thought processes, so that the purchase of clothing becomes linked to the primary necessity of dressing the body. We have no interest in creating a new aesthetic or in creating a new trend based on interesting storytelling.
Fairly recently the fashion industry has introduced a system of collection sales that greatly intensifies the frequency of presentations (think of the various capsules to “fill the spaces” between fall-winter and spring-summer), creating a false sense of need in the consumer. This has brought clothing and the fashion industry to the crest of the wave of consumerism, and this does not match our values.
Our aesthetic is timeless nobility, at ease surrounded by art and beauty. Anyone who wears Tramapulia clothing knows this well.
This is why we believe that fashion has the potential to champion a drastic change in direction, because producer and consumer are not simply two gears in a system but individuals capable of independent thought.
Wearing Tramapulia
Those who wear Tramapulia know how to avoid getting drawn into the mechanisms that favour consumerism and the overproduction of certain brands in the clothing industry. They are often young, skilled professionals because they are aware of sustainability issues and they are sophisticated in nature.
Only those who know how to appreciate beauty, art, and social and environmental sustainability can wear Tramapulia to full effect.
These are the same people who love personalising our garments on our e-commerce, buying bespoke garments outside of standard sizes and personalising items with monograms.
Our sustainable choices
At Tramapulia we try every day to change direction, do a complete turnaround on project design and material choices, right down to packaging.
Our commitment to sustainability starts with the selection of our yarns and is present at all stages, and all of those stages happen in-house.
The entire production of Tramapulia is envisaged on a daily basis from the viewpoints of environmental sustainability and social justice. It is a truly fundamental aspect for us and our ability to produce our garments with as little impact as possible on the environment is a point of pride.
We have always preferred quality over quantity, we protect and enhance the abilities and lives of our craftsmen and employees, and we train professionals who are aware of the importance of their work.
Each step before contact with your skin is traceable and transparent: we want to tell you everything there is to know about us and our extended family.
Your sustainable choices
Sustainable choices in the clothing industry are not just down to businesses.
You can take care when choosing products, pay attention to the world around you, and choose companies which respect the environment and the social conditions of their employees. Some trends are consumerist traps, others are the right road to follow for those who wish to improve.
Choose based on your own needs, compare as many alternatives as possible, and try your best to choose the one with the least impact.
Between us at Tramapulia and you, the customer, there is a newly minted relationship of reciprocal trust.
